Media map: Who’s reading what, and where

“We worked with Bitly and its data on millions of Web clicks to find the most influential media outlets in the country,” according to Forbes. “This map shows which news sources are read and shared at above-average levels by state. Roll over and click on the media outlets below to see where they influence readers and which stories were big hits. Updated monthly to reflect the latest trends.”

Examples: For California, the L.A. Times shows up; for Texas, it’s Fox News.

The map is here.

  1. Can’t view the map on laptop but Politico findings show Fox viewers most mis-informed which isn’t surprising. Talking to my multi-milliomaire, surrogate brother, whose parents took me in after operation for first cancer in ’70, definitely a Republican–but I had him confirm for me that his dead brother’s(my pal) ex wife and her boy friend, do indeed sell fully automatic assault rifles at gun shows; one sells one half, the other sells the other half. Common practice down yonder. I emailed them a response to a nasty Obama hating anti health care bill video which was near impossible to follow and refute, admonishing them that 2nd amendment doesn’t protect right to bear arms for personal defence–but rec’d no response. Made some of the argument on one of the local right wing sites, but I don’t have the energy for Sisyphean tasks with Torquemadian ideologues whom I see use ridicule and insult and supposededly neutral sources which are not, to make, unmakeable cases. But, I opened w/o tact My points, along with me, were not in their league, I was an idiot or whatever, you all know they’re drill. But most of what I was saying was coming straight out of a new book on the 2nd amendment, A Well Regulated Militia, Saul Cornell–Associate Prof. of History Ohio St. andDirector of the Second Amendment Research Center at the John Glenn Institute. Of course, this book isn’t my only source.

    And NOBODY follows them anyway.

  2. Interesting map. That Huff Post is strongest in above average figures in WV, OK & LA indicates that bitly is probably skewing to web based alternative media ( big shock). The Onion is strongest in WI, MN, and ND, confirming the sense of humor I know the upper Midwest to possess. And finally, Oregon is the home of the grainy, alternative, forest dwelling, elven, Shakespeare loving NPR aficionados, making me wonder when the wheel turned and we went from “Don’t Californicate Oregon” to “California needs an Oregonism”!

  3. I was going to sy Oregonasm but I didnt think it would make the cut!

    • In another coup for our northern neighbor,Matt Groening has confirmed what many of us cartoonists have suspected for many years, Springfield, Oregon is the true home of Homer Simpson. Doh!
