Obama’s coming today

Life is full of surprises. We heard and saw military helicopters overhead on our vacation north of Fort Lauderdale, and my wife connected the dots: She pointed to online newspaper articles that President Obama is coming near here today for a $2 million fundraising binge (up to $10,000 a plate for lunch alone) and to give a nationally televised speech at nearby Florida Atlantic University.

And while raising all this money, Obama will be advocating taxing the wealthy, including poor Rush Limbaugh, whose home is near the scene of the day-long itinerary. It’s not going to be one of Rush’s better days.

We’re going to pass on the $10,000 lunch, but the President’s speech is just 10 minutes away from the Publix supermarket where I’ve been buying fresh-made Cuban sandwiches (ham, cheese, pickles and so forth) for $4.11 each for our picnic lunches at the beach.

We’ve been told to steer clear of the traffic jams that will result from closed intersections. “Obama will begin his day at the Palm Beach Gardens home of Hansel Emory Tookes II for a $10,000-a-plate luncheon about 1:15 p.m.,” the Miami Herald is reporting. “At 2:55 p.m., he is scheduled to give his ‘Buffet Rule’ remarks at the Boca Raton campus of FAU.

“About three hours later, he is scheduled to attend a Westin Diplomat Hotel fundraiser featuring Grammy-winning artist John Legend, and he could stop by a gay-rights group fundraiser as well in the hotel.” The “Buffet Rule” is nicknamed for financier Warren Buffet, who pays lower tax rates than his secretary.

  1. Get a couple of those “plates” to go! I’d like to see what costs $500 a bite.
