Climate change scientists counts the cost of honesty

“The scientist who has borne the full brunt of attacks by climate change deniers, including death threats and accusations of misappropriating funds, is set to hit back,” according to the Guardian.

“Michael E. Mann, creator of the “hockey stick” graph that illustrates recent rapid rises in global temperatures, is to publish a book next month detailing the “disingenuous and cynical” methods used by those who have tried to disprove his findings. The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars is a startling depiction of a scientist persecuted for trying to tell the truth.

“Among the tactics used against Mann were the theft and publication, in 2009, of emails he had exchanged with climate scientist Professor Phil Jones of East Anglia University. Selected, distorted versions of these emails were then published on the internet in order to undermine UN climate talks due to begin in Copenhagen a few weeks later. These negotiations ended in failure. The use of those emails to kill off the climate talks was ‘a crime against humanity, a crime against the planet,’ says Mann, a scientist at Penn State University.

“In his book, Mann warns that ‘public discourse has been polluted now for decades by corporate-funded disinformation – not just with climate change but with a host of health, environmental and societal threats.’ The implications for the planet are grim, he adds.

  1. Jeff: thanks for running that Guardian piece. It’s scary what the crazies on the right wing are doing. Al

  2. But, but according the Russ Steele it’s cause by solar flares coming from Uranus (or in his case “Your Anus”).

It’s really sad that he wants to quantify the temperature rise in some type of nonsensical argument saying that humans have done “nothing” to accelerate the rate of temperature rise and it’s all from the Sun?

No wonder he’s no longer employed with TRW!

  3. You better believe that he is enjoying his pension from a combination of his military service and working for the military industrial complex at TRW based on fat government contracts to create spy stuff, while bitching and complaining about everyone else sucking off the government!

  4. Michael Mann regrettably did what most of us do when discussing those holding a different point of view; we call them names and talk about what we would metaphorically do. As I say, most of us do that when talking with out friends and most of us would never say such things if we knew that our private email containing those conversations would be hacked or our telephone conversations were bugged. For some strange reason the conversation about Mr Mann has centered about his use of language not about the fact that someone hacked his email account. Wikileaks has done far less than hack people’s private email accounts and yet there are some in this country that want Julian Assange extradited and tried for treason (although he is not a United States Citizen and no grounds exist to extradite him). Just when will be see an investigation into who hacked Mr. Mann’s account? I suspect that when we do get to the bottom of this we really won’t be surprised at the identity of those involved.
