Local towns nationally vote to undo Citizens United

The Nevada City council voted unanimously to support a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision. It’s happening elsewhere too.

  1. After the 2012 election cycle and the unbelievable amount of super pac money spent I think the people will have the outrage to push their representatives, which will give them the political will to address the number problem with our nation/ state capitals. Government up to the highest bidder.

  2. It was disappointing to see people (the usual suspects) making fun of the issue on R.L. Crabb’s blog:

I never heard a peep of criticism from them when the TPP won the Grand Prize in the town’s Independence Parade. ;)

    • Yes, yes…I know sarcasm is only funny when it’s directed at Republicans. I applaud the efforts of our local activists to overturn Citizens United, but like most rational people, I know the numbers don’t add up. Even if they could get it through Congress, it will not get the two-thirds of state legislators to go along.
It was much the same with the Patriot Act. I even got up and added my voice to the dissenters then, noting that once you give that kind of power to the govt. they will be reluctant to ever give it up. Even with Obama, it’s still with us.
And by the way, happy birthday, Jeff:)

      • RL, I think you and so many others are way too shortsightedly pessimistic and dismissive. There are probably forms of leverage that have not yet been realized to corner our representatives into voting how the people demand them to vote.
Side note – it’s 2/3 of both houses of congress, then 3/4 of states must ratify, right? That, or call a constitutional convention.
Other highly contentious amendments have been ratified. Difference is, those other amendments were controversial among actual human beings. The concept that large corporations have more power than they should is not contentious among human beings.
However your pessimism and dismissiveness is a useful tool to show the amenders what areas to focus on – so whatever you do don’t stop now!

      • Being an old curmudgeon is a thankless job, Tom, but someone has to do it.

      • My general philosophy is that I try not to vote for any candidate who has taken loads of cash, and filled my mailbox with junk mail (or clogged our airwaves with air-headed commercials). Any candidate who does that has been bought off–and since I don’t give many if any political contributions, I’m not the one who will benefit.

What’s worse, voting for a guy from Rod Blagojevich’s world, or the Don Quixote who refuses (or is not offered) campaign cash? I like voting for a no-name Don Quixote from a minor party now and then!

      • The USS City Hall is good and funny as always.

Wondering if there’s some misconception that Nevada City, or even Berkeley, was out front on this. Los Angeles and New York City are a few of the 80-or-so others before Nevada City:

  3. I don’t know, R.L., I thought the doomsday clock was hysterical and wonderfully drawn. Just one opinion though. I laughed out loud though, a good sign:)

  4. Bernie was, I think, mayor of Burlington when I was still living in Killington and Rutland, Vt. Gotta love those Vermonters. And, there’s nothing like Vermont when the leaves are changing, nott the Rockies or any where else I’ve been. Haven’t been to Washington state, but don’t know if the have they sugar maples, nor the right, rounded mountains, that make VT so spectacular. Evan though Etahn Allan was somewhat of a rough and tough neer do well.
