Will Limbaugh’s comments finally cause the GOP to cut ties?

“Rush Limbaugh has been called the godfather of the GOP, a conservative firebrand whose enormous following by millions of disciples known as ‘dittoheads’ has given him unprecedented clout in the Republican party,” the Canadian Free Press is writing.

“But the talk radio star may have finally forced the party to seriously ponder cutting ties after branding a third-year law student at Georgetown University a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute’ for her congressional testimony about U.S. President Barack Obama’s contraception policies.

‘”While Republican leaders owe no apology for Mr. Limbaugh’s comments, they do have a responsibility to repudiate them — and him,’ the Washington Post wrote in a weekend editorial.

“‘For the good of U.S. political culture — or at least its own political self-interest — the GOP must distance itself from Mr. Limbaugh.’

“Conservative David Frum, the Canadian-born pundit and former George W. Bush speechwriter, has warned the party for years about Limbaugh’s influence.

‘On Sunday, he described Limbaugh’s weekend apology to Fluke, coming in the face of fleeing advertisers and suggestions she has grounds for a libel lawsuit, as ‘about the most graceless apology ever.’

‘”What is good for Rush Limbaugh is not necessarily what’s good for the Republican party,’ Frum added on CNN’s ‘Reliable Sources.’

“While Limbaugh may have lost some advertisers, Frum said, ‘he leaves the party behind him in a smoking ruin.’”

  1. George Will: GOP leaders are afraid of Limbaugh:

BTW, these guys — from George R. to “Billy T.” — are all local Republicans too:
    http://rebaneruminations.typepad.com/rebanes_ruminations/2012/03/the-sad-story-of-sandra-fluke.html

Is the local GOP leadership, local GOP “electeds”and local business and civic leaders afraid of them too? Yep.

  2. Although the Republicans have distanced themselves from Rush’s language toward Sandra Fluke, they will not repudiate Rush because Rush is their ideological leader. In fact, I predict that come Monday morning Rush will be back at it blasting liberals for having no sense of humor and trying to make himself a victim of political correctness. The Republicans will be back on board

  3. I just read the “ruminations” (of a madman), and the comments. They have some sick puppies over there.

  4. I hope so…the man’s a self-impressed blowhard, not the Messiah!
Actually… a total Ass in my book!

  5. “Graceless appology” is a polite description for an insincere, added insult apology. If that was an apology then American mannersdisappeared have descended into the dust. Limbaugh has simply drawn attention to the madness that is happening in state legislatures controlled by Republicans. Republicans aren’t the least bit interested in the well being of women. They believe they should have their fun and women must support the progeny without assess to means.

  6. Limbaugh loses seventh advertiser:

  7. You can always count on Greg Goodknight to keep us honest. He writes on R.L. Crabb’s blog:

“There’s nothing over at Steele’s that resembles a dogpile on Ms.Fluke, who is a pol with an activist past prior to entering law school at age 28 or so.”

    Wow.

  8. And these people over at Rebane’s and Steele’s just lie and lie and lie and think no one will catch on. Latest, Billy T. who claims that United Health Group is a “Catholic”…

“Georgetown is a Catholic school that uses a Catholic insurance provider whose parent company is a Catholic Organization.”

Well, just a little research shows this is not true….

Where do these people come up with this cr*p?

  9. I seriously doubt this will be the end of king limbaugh of the gop unless he wants it to be. He has had issues like this over and over again. Right wing radio is an echo chamber and a bubble. He is in his 60′s with a drug problem, erectile problem, hearing problem, lives on what I have heard described as a compound in FL where he broadcasts his show, and his last contract was for $400 million dollars. Ego and addiction to power/ money are the only things keeping this man in the game.

  10. “Are we being fair to Rush Limbaugh” is here:

  11. Jeff,
    I good breakdown by Frum.

Again this is nothing new for Limbaugh. The only thing different is the political atmosphere and the rise of the Occupy/ 99% movement where more people are becoming comfortable speaking out. That is the big difference here. There is something empowering about becoming an activist in America. Redress of grievances a.k.a. petitioning/ protesting was directly written into our Constitution.

    Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Unfortunately both parties of the authoritarian duopoly just passed a law scrubbing this right from the books, HR 347. The first amendment is now dependent on the veto of President Obama. The text is pretty straight forward and it makes selective enforcement inevitable. When we all become criminals it becomes the biggest deterrent from speaking out in fear of being arrested.

  12. I would truly love to see every advertiser pull the plug on Rush Limbaugh. He’s been filth even before the sheeple started flocking to him.

  13. Well, silence by the Republicans proof they are afraid of Rush. Meanwhile, Rush blames Obama and the left for his 3 day efforts to dehumanize Sandra Fluke. Moreover, at this point Rush has become so wealthy that he can just tell the sponsors to go stick it in their ear and self finance his daily lies and pontifications.

  14. I hope he does for the sponsor’s sake.

  15. On a Facebook posting, the clothing retailer JCPenney announced that it will ensure that its advertisements do not appear on the Rush Limbaugh radio show: “We have a strict ‘No Run’ policy in place specifically regarding The Rush Limbaugh Show. After jcpenney confirms the facts, we will contact any local radio station that is in violation of our radio advertising parameters to ensure that our ‘No Run’ policy is adhered to regarding this program.” According to a ThinkProgress count, at least 33 companies have dropped Rush.
Will all these companies leaving sposorship, will KNCO care?

  16. I could be wrong. I thought Limbaugh would just lay low, hunker down and wait it out. He is sort of doing that – but he seems to be in free fall. He could go down if the sponsors abandon him and radio stations start cutting him loose. If so, it would be an incredible moment of self destruction. Couldn’t be happening to a nicer guy.

    • Rush Limbaugh is nothing but a shock entertainer. He bites chicken necks for a living. He’s neither a journalist, a newsperson, a writer, nor a scholar.

We’ve been down this road before, many many times since he first crawled out of the Rio Linda swamp, like Gollum with his precious.

Once again, the left has forgotten the cardinal rule about Rush: ignore him, or he will stick to you like a tar baby. Go ahead, listen to KNCO tomorrow. It’s going to be a tawdry back-and-forth between two Potemkin-village sides, claiming to be equally wronged. I’ll be doing something else that morning, for sure.

The sponsors will return or be replaced and Rush will be a bigger blowhard than ever before. Does the left get bent out of shape when Don Imus or Jon Stewart make “inappropriate” comments? I seem to remember George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton in a South Park episode that was exceptionally rude, even for those guys.

Let’s talk about fixing out broken health care system, not about repairing an unrepentant and laughing-all-the-way-to-the-bank Limbaugh.
