“From Negro Creek to Wop Draw, place names offend,” by the Associated Press, is published in the Bee this morning. It mentions the dispute in our county. An AP story like this circulates nationally, drawing attention to our county’s public decision making.
“The all-white Board of Supervisors recommended Dec. 6 that it not be changed, that they did ‘not view the word ‘Negro’ as a pejorative,’” the AP story published in the Bee said.
“Said the NAACP’s Jenkins, ‘When you stoop so low to have that name and in 2011 you have the audacity not to want to change it with some reason that defies logic, well it’s even more offensive.’”
The story is here.

As I suggested long ago, bag the colonial mindset already.
It has a Nisenan name.
I couldn’t agree more, Judith.
Any shift toward recognizing the great heritage of this area is a good thing. Whether the impostor name is offensive or not is missing the point.
