‘John C. Fremont’ to speak at tea party meeting in Yuba City
“Rex Ruth in character as Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Sutter Buttes Tea Party Patriots,” the Appeal-Democrat is reporting in its briefs.
“Portraying Fremont in 1864, Ruth will talk about the California Constitution and the role Latino people had in how California was attained by the United States.
“The meeting is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Hans Miller building, 420 Miles Ave., Yuba City.”

I am sure many of my cousins will be in attendance. If the depiction J C Fremont is anything like Glenn Beck’s version of Thomas Paine that group will leave the event knowing less than they came with.
I’ve often wondered if the slogan, “Give me liberty or give me death,” wasn’t something Thomas Paine picked up from one of the unwilling teenaged customers of his dad’s shop?
For those who didn’t know, dad made corsets…..
I think you mean Patrick Henry.
D.K.:
Thomas Paine wrote some powerful words, but “Give me liberty or give me death” came from Patrick Henry. The full text (reconstructed as it is) is worth reading:

You’re both right, my bad, twas reading about Thomas Paine last night at this website, and the joke over-rode my other thought processes. http://www.crf-usa.org/bill-of-rights-in-action/blog.html
That’s okay Mr. Keachie, I’ve had many a “brain fart” myself.
I knew it was Patrick Henry, because when I was in 8th grade I went to Patrick Henry Intermediate School in what is now known as Silicon Valley.
It’s now a Chiropractic College.
When I lived there as a child, the Santa Clara Valley was a glorious, verdant, fertile valley, with gorgeous blue skies.
People ought to know that.
Thank-you Judith,
There was sill a great fresh and dried fruit farm tucked in between Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, that I loved to visit during the 1980′s and 1990′s. I made a point of getting dried apricots there, every time.
Fremont before the Civil War was about freeing the slaves (i.e. limiting property rights), and giving away federal land in the West to settlers. I wonder if this will be part of the presentation?
This is what I wondered too.
And US imperialism
Um…Groovy?
Kate
And no mention of the role of the California Indians? What is he, a standup comedian?
I would love it if they got Clay Jenkinson to come do Thomas Jefferson for them. They would see a very different side to Jefferson than the one they routinely quote out of context.
Jumping back to Fremont–from what little I know, by far, a much less complicated personality than Jefferson–he did Lincoln no service in deed or written word, such as when he wrote, “I consider that his administration has been politically, militarily, and financially a failure, and that its necessary continuance is a cause of regret for the country”. He had his chance, in Missouri, to achieve some military successes of note, but failed when presented with the opportunity. And, as we all know, his attempt to move into the White House was as successful as Perry’s.
