At Wednesday’s meeting, the Nevada City Council will be urged to consider keeping the APPLE Center open.
“Council Member Senum has requested this issue be on your agenda for discussion in regard to having a letter sent to the APPLE board to urge them to keep the Center open rather than terminate their lease at the end of February. The APPLE board meeting is on January 26.”
The termination of the APPLE Center lease will reduce the city revenue by $500 a month until a new tenant can be located.
I would support this plan. The Center has been a valuable educational and research resource. It needs to be staffed with volunteers. The community and city has put real energy into the project — with rent reductions and “sweat equity.” Let’s see if it can be revitalized.
In other action:
•Shelly Covert, secretary-treasurer of Nisenan Historical Culture Preservation is asking the Council for a letter of support for a nonprofit federal grant proposal to develop a cultural center, record stories and songs from the elders and develop educational curriculum for classes. Go Shelly! Our son has benefitted from learning about the Nisenan culture.
•A discussion about whether to uphold, overturn or modify a planning commission decision of a sign for “elevensies” crepe restaurant business. The font approved by the commission for the sign is “not appropriate” with “Mother Lode type of architecture,” as stipulated in the city’s municipal code, opponents argue.
•Sierra Streams Institute (formerly Friends of Deer Creek) have submitted two applications to Sierra Nevada Conservancy for funding for fire clearing on the entire Sugar Loaf Mountain property. The second grant will fund the creation of a Forest Management Plan for the Hirschman’s Pond and Intian Trails open space properties.
The Nevada City Council agenda is here.
