Gold mining project not such a boon to homeowners

“With the price of gold at an all-time high, you would think the prospect of finding gold in your backyard would thrill anyone. But if you ask residents in one Colorado mountain town, they’ll tell you they’re anything but thrilled,” according to 9news.com.

“A group of neighbors in Fairplay is irritated with a miner from Colorado Springs who is looking to dig up a 5-acre parcel of land near their neighborhood.

“‘The closest home is 75 feet from the mine,’ said Trevor Messa, who lives nearby.

“Neighbors are concerned their property value will drop significantly. In fact, one man said he wasn’t able to sell some property because of the proposed mining project.

“‘When that mine starts to operate, it’s pretty much going to render those properties unsellable,’ Messa added.

  1. This is exactly why one of the reasons that many homeowners in the vicinity of the IMM sites are concerned. There other concerns are water supply and pollution, air pollution, traffic, and noise. And all with exactly no benefit to the community except perhaps (and there is no guarantee) a few unskilled or low skill (and presumably low paying) jobs. The miners who will actually be better paid may or may not relocate to Grass Valley. Typically they will come in mobile homes so it may be a boon to our nearby (not necessarily in Grass Valley) mobile home park owners. If the mine goes through, it will be interesting to see just who will want to buy a Loma Rica McMansion at MacBoyle lake. Between the mine and the airplanes over head I’m not sure I’d want to invent my money in a home there. It is almost as if one hand of Grass Valley doesn’t know what the other hand of Grass Valley is doing.

  2. If you own a plane, being next to the airport is a Godsend. How’d you like to bicycle three miles to where your car was parked next to the freeway? Hope this helps understand the mindset.

    • There is parking at the airport, or when you pull your plane out of the hangar you can pull your car (or bicycle in). I love airplanes, but I wouldn’t want to live off the end of the runway! Besides, that still doesn’t account for the noise, dirt, and pollution issues the mine will bring. I just threw in the airplane part to highlight how unfortunately situated the McMansions will be not only because of the mine but because they will get to know Cal Fire and all the other airport traffic very up close and personal. Sadly, they will be the first people to try to shut the airport down because of the noise, too. The assumption that the people who by there will be pilots seems kind of strange to me. Most pilots have enough sense not to buy a home so close to the preferred departure path. And contrary to what many think, small airplane pilots and/or owners are not necessarily wealthy enough to buy the homes we are talking about. Some are, but by far many are not. (Commercial ASEL- CFI glider here, if you are wondering). Still the point is that the pollution, noise, dirt, etc. from the mine will make the homes in Loma Rica, especially the McMansions, rather undesirable.
