Wanted: Nevada City police chief

The job description and application for Nevada City police chief is posted online on the city’s website. The deadline to apply is Dec. 23 and inteviews are set for Jan. 17 and 18:

•”Competitive candidates must have a minimum of 7 years professional law enforcement experience, a BS/BA in a related field, California POST Management Certificate or be able to attain within one year of hire, and a valid California driver’s license.

“Additionally, the ideal candidate will be a person with the following qualifications:

Is a respected leader in the organization and in the community that maintains ethical standards.

Enjoys and works well in a small town atmosphere.

Presents a professional approach in the face of challenges.

Total compensation: $48,000 annually for the part-time job.

  1. With all due respect to the new city manager, I hope the full city council will be taking part in the selection process, because hiring a police chief is different than hiring for any other position in city administration.

    Yes, the chief answers to the city manager, but in 1995, when Lou was hired, the entire council –– along with the city manager –– conducted the preliminary interviews of a dozen candidates who survived the parer screening, and also conducted follow-up interviews held with the top three finalists. We each had one vote and we brought our own perspective (and questions) to the interviews.

    If my memory (and math) are accurate, the current council represents over 20 years combined experience with issues the new chief will be facing. It seems to this observer of Nevada City politics that their experience and insight would be an asset at the interview table.
