Sierra Foothills Report on hiatus for two weeks

After digesting some of the vitriolic comments here, I’ve decided it’s time to take a breather from Sierra Foothills Report for two weeks.

Let’s revert to the “old world order” of bottleneck communications (with no online forum) from The Union et al. for a while and see how it works.

It’s no skin off my nose. In fact, it’s a refresher. Whether it’s any skin off the community’s nose remains to be seen. Let’s see if somebody else picks up the ball. Sierra Foothills Report is a public experiment.

See you in two weeks.

Homemade crepes in downtown Nevada City

Elevensies Homemade Crepes opened this weekend in Nevada City, a fun addition to the historic downtown.

At 408 Broad St., it offers a wide array of organic and locally inspired crepes.

As Nevada City’s only food cart, Elevensies is open for lunch six days a week and on weekend late nights.

More competition for The Union’s parent from their ex-staffers

Former Swift Communications staffers have launched an online news site called SouthTahoeNow.com that will compete head-to-head with the chain with some innovative features.

It is the “Now.com’s” group’s second website in the territory (and crosshairs) of Swift newspapers, which owns The Union, as well as newspapers in Lake Tahoe, Carson City and other locals. CarsonNow.com already exists. The expansion comes as the internet is revolutionizing communication.

“South Now is a local news website serving the South Lake Tahoe area,” it reads. “We are dedicated to the advancement of community journalism and educating local readers about current news and events.”

Its founding principles are:
• Community news belongs to the community.
• Everyone is a reporter, and everyone is an editor.
• The best local journalism comes from a mix of involved citizens reporting what they know and see, professional journalists helping make sense of it all, and sharp-eyed readers who question everything.
• People are always more important than institutions.
• Don’t compete. Collaborate, complement, cooperate.
• We will always strive to make it as easy as possible for everyone to add content, from cell phones, email, web browsers, etc.
• Everyone can participate, as long as they respect the rights of others to participate as well.

The founder of CarsonNow, and its new sister publication, SouthTahoeNow.com, is Kirk Caraway and the editor is Jeff Munson. Both are former Swift staffers.

Competition is coming to the Swift chain — and not just from Sierra Foothills Report.

11 California newspapers to become 2

“MediaNews Group will combine 11 of its daily newspapers in the San Francisco Bay area into two to save money,” according to Politico.com.

“The shake-up announced at the company built by Dean Singleton will affect newspapers located across the bay from San Francisco. Beginning Nov. 2, those newspapers will shed their distinct identities and adopt one of two new brands, the East Bay Tribune and The Times.

“Fewer newspaper brands will result in fewer jobs. The Bay Area News Group, a division that operates the affected newspapers, expects to reduce a staff of 1,500 about 8 percent, or 120. An office in Walnut Creek, Calif., will close.

Is “ill” Steve Jobs image a fake?

“TMZ (a gossip website) published a photo on Friday purporting to show a very ill Steve Jobs, but commenters at the website Reddit point to evidence that the image is a fake,” according to TheDailyBeast.com. “There are signs that the image was pinched to make Jobs look more frail; that parts of the image have been cropped; and that some of the shapes in the image are unnatural. The Daily Beast briefly linked to the image on TMZ but removed it after learning that it was dubious.”

Lots of news outlets aren’t pointing to the photo. One that is: local Todd Juvinall’s blog. In fact, he has republished the photo on his blog. Sierra Foothills Report would not point to such a photo (fake or not) out of respect for the person.

Hurricane Irene hits East Coast

“The center of Hurricane Irene has now hit the coast of North Carolina near Cape Lookout with Category 1-force winds of 85 mph,” according to ABC News

“Hurricane warnings for the next 48 hours have been issued for North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, coastal Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

“So far, eastern North Carolina has already seen three tornadoes in the past few days, and the majority of the state and areas of Maryland and Virginia are under tornado watches through Sunday.

“Stacy township, on the coast of North Carolina, is seeing 93 mph wind gusts this morning.

“The far end of the fishing pier in Atlantic Beach, N.C. collapsed overnight, ABC News affiliate WTVD reported. The 100-foot long pier is still standing, but its end has disappeared into the ocean.”

Sierra Brewfest is this afternoon

This afternoon beer lovers can relax under towering pines at one of the state’s most beautiful fairgrounds and taste superb brews from more than two dozen microbreweries.

The 22nd annual Sierra BrewFest is Saturday from 3-6:30 p.m. at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. The popular Music in the Mountains fundraiser features hand-crafted beers, food and live music.

“This year promises over 30 of the best microbreweries, offering more than 100 hand-crafted beers,” says Terry Brown, MIM’s co-executive director. “The selection includes lagers, ales, porters, stouts, ciders and more.”

Sip your suds to the sound of Bob Mora and the Third Degree Blues Band. Enjoy grilled sausages and barbeque, Mexican food, crepes, sushi and ice cream.

Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the gate for unlimited tastings and a souvenir beer glass. Designated drivers and non-tasters are free.

Music in the Mountains, the largest classical music group in the foothills, is celebrating its 30th anniversary season.

Does The Union use its editorial to drum up $$$ for itself?

Here’s a coincidence:

The Union writes an article: “Slammed by state regulators, Diego’s owner reaches out to fight back.” The details in the news section are here:

http://www.theunion.com/article/20110826/NEWS/110829872/1001&parentprofile=1053

Then, after the article appears, The Union’s Facebook page reads:

“If you’ve ever enjoyed a meal at Diegos in Grass Valley, you’ll understand why folks want to help save it. You can help! By pre-buying a future meal using TheUnion.com’s new “Steal the Deal” service, Digeo’s gets paid right away, and you can look forward to a “Bowl of Love” some Tuesday or Wednesday in the future. Help spread the word!
