How public sector jobs grew under Texas Gov. Perry

“As Texas Gov. Rick Perry ponders a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, Texans weighing his economic legacy are debating the role played by a long boom in government jobs—and the possible bust ahead,” The Wall Street Journal is reporting.

“Texas has enjoyed the most robust economy in the U.S. during Mr. Perry’s decade as governor, which is one reason his potential candidacy is attracting national attention. The Lone Star State gained more than a million jobs since the end of 2000, while the U.S. has lost almost 1.5 million, according data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“About 300,000 of the new Texas jobs were in government. Well over half of them, fueled by the surging population, were at public schools. Employment in the state’s public sector has jumped 19% since 2000, compared with a 9% rise in the private sector.

“Now layoffs loom. State budget cuts, championed by Mr. Perry to address a big budget shortfall, are prompting school districts around the state to lay off hundreds of teachers and other workers going into the school year starting next month.

“The layoffs haven’t shown up in federal data, but some economists forecast they may damp the state’s vaunted economic growth. And many more jobs are likely to disappear over the next two years as a result of about $15 billion in state budget cuts.

“‘I would certainly anticipate that government jobs would be a drag in the next couple of years,” said Ray Perryman, a nonpartisan economist based in Waco.’”

Perry inches closer to 2012 bid

“He’s hosting a steady stream of Republican supplicants in Austin, his would-be organization is stepping up its outreach, and they’re both talking to key early-state operatives and players,” according to Politico.

“Rick Perry is poised to shake up the GOP presidential race.

“As it increasingly appears likely the Texas governor will launch a White House bid, Perry’s ramp-up has become eerily reminiscent of the front porch strategy then-Gov. George W. Bush employed in 1999 at the governor’s mansion ahead of his own presidential run – but at an accelerated pace.

“This week alone, Perry is meeting in the Texas capital with a group of elected officials from Arkansas, then with another later in the week from Tennessee and Georgia. He’s also hosting a group of national donors. Next week, he’s set to sit down with a different set of bundlers.”

Prop 23 backer fined $500K for air-quality violations

Tesoro, the Texas oil refiner that poured money into Prop. 23 and Dan Logue’s campaign, has been fined $500,000 for more than 40 air-quality violations. Prop. 23 lost handily, including in our county.

“Regulators have fined oil giant Tesoro $500,000 for more than 40 air-quality violations at its East Bay refinery between 2006 and 2009,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Officials with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Monday said emissions from the Golden Eagle refinery in Martinez routinely exceeded air-quality standards for carbon monoxide, particulate pollution, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and other pollutants during the four-year period.

“The San Antonio-based company was also cited for reporting violations and for failing to fix leaky tanks and to inspect equipment at the facility.”

NEWS
Tickets For Burning Man 2011 Sold Out

Tickets for Burning Man 2011 have sold out. For the first time in 25 years of holding the Burning Man event, we have had to cut off ticket sales before the event. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which oversees the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area, requires us to manage growth in line with the previous year’s population in order to comply with our use permit. As a result, Burning Man has exercised its oft-stated right to cap ticket sales.

Tickets will NOT be sold at the Burning Man Gate, nor at Walk-In Outlets. If you don’t have a ticket, do NOT show up at the Gate. If you choose to purchase tickets from a third party, please take precautions to ensure their authenticity before you purchase them to avoid counterfeits and scams. If you are selling your ticket, we strongly encourage you to sell it at face value, or better yet, gift it! Information on how to buy and sell third-party tickets more safely can be found here on our ticket page.

For those considering venturing out to Black Rock City without a ticket to “try your luck” purchasing one at or near the entrance to Burning Man, we ask that you do NOT do so, for your own safety and the well-being of the surrounding communities. The Black Rock Desert is an extremely remote, inhospitable environment with limited resources, minimal facilities, and few camping opportunities in the vicinity. You will NOT be allowed to camp overnight anywhere near the event site, and the nearest campgrounds are over an hour’s drive away.
