Emgold president moonlighting as a The Union reporter?

The main feature on The Union’s website on Friday turned out to be “special to The Union” feature written by none other than David Watkinson, president of Emgold, which is seeking to reopen the Idaho-Maryland Mine. A video is promoted too. The article is here.

What ever happened to practicing balanced journalism for a project like this? How many members of our community own “friends and family” stock in Emgold, betting that the mine will pass? As the Sacramento Bee stated wisely on the hard-money loan expose, we are a “tight-knight” group. Is this “citizen journalism”?

No, Mr. Pelline is not a “leftwing” blogger

“In this regard the former editor of The Union, Jeff Pelline, has recently proposed that Nevada County hold another economic summit,” George Rebane spews on KVMR, who has handed George (a self-admitted $$$ donor to the radio station) a platform. “Mr Pelline is a leftwing blogger who maintains a prominent voice in the county. He has attracted a halo of fellow progressives of similar mind to his proposal.”

No, I’m not a “leftwing” blogger. I have voted for Democrats and Republicans over the years and am as “middle as the road” as you can get. A family member remains a registered GOP.

The trouble with George, and his ilk, is that he’s so far to the right than anybody in the middle is considered “leftwing.” It’s a real problem in our provincial little community — labeling moderates as leftists.

The reason that Sierra Foothills Report has “attracted a halo of progressives” is because The Union and KNCO — the dominant media — has shut them out. I celebrate a diversity of opinion. If being different than George makes me “leftwing,” I celebrate that.

Many of our up-and-coming community leaders are in total agreement with my opinion.

Anybody who has read George’s blog and commentary would have no problem labeling him a “right wingnut.” He also uses derogatory and — in fact — racist terms such as “ragheads.” Would anybody want to dispute that?

When will our community move forward? Or is George just a KVMR “donor”?

Home prices could drop 10 percent to 25 percent further

“Robert Shiller, the economist who co- founded the S&P/Case-Shiller index of U.S. home prices, said a further decline in property values of 10 percent to 25 percent in the next five years ‘wouldn’t surprise me at all,’ according to Bloomberg News.

“’There’s no precedent for this statistically, so no way to predict,’ Shiller said today at a conference hosted by Standard & Poor’s in New York.

“U.S. home prices plunged 33 percent in 20 cities through March from their 2006 peak, reaching their lowest level since 2003, according to a Case-Shiller report on May 31. The decline signaled a ‘double dip’ as the index fell below its previous post-housing-bubble low set in April 2009.

“Prices more than doubled from 2000 to July 2006.

“A backlog of foreclosures poised to hit the market means prices may stay depressed, dissuading builders from starting new construction. Unemployment, which rose to 9.1 percent in May, and stricter lending conditions are signs that any recovery in housing may take years.

“Shiller’s comments paint a more pessimistic possibility for home prices than other forecasts.”

What do Congress members McClintock and Matsui have in common?

Congress members Tom McClintock and Doris Matsui, though representing neighboring districts, do not have much in common politics-wise.

But I am sure of this: Neither would Tweet photos of their midriffs to fellow Americans.

It’s a reminder that we have more in common than we think — if we just look around. And a reminder that our 435 members of Congress are an eclectic bunch, just like America itself.
