Authentic rib joint opens on Hwy. 49 in North Auburn

Jared and his smoker

A real, honest-to-goodness barbecue joint has opened on Hwy. 49 in North Auburn this past weekend — just in time for summer.

Hank’s Meat & Potatoes — “home of the finger-suckin’ good stuff” — offers ribs, chicken, pulled pork and tri-tips, as well as wood-grilled rib-eye steaks and burgers. A pulled-pork sandwich with a side goes for $6. Sides include potatoes hand cut the old-fashioned way into french fries (with the potato skin intact), as well as fresh cole slaw, baked beans and other items.

The smoker out front is custom-made. Hank’s is on Hwy. 49 at 25005 Shale Ridge Rd. in Auburn. Here’s a quick iPhone shot of the owner Jared and his smoker. (Hank, the restaurant’s namesake, “is in the car seat,” Jared told me).

Smokey’s Kitchen in Truckee also is a good rib house.

  1. Love it! I wish Jared would do one of those in GV.

    • Check out Gold Rush Burgers & BBQ on E. Main Street. Place is pretty good!

      • Got it, thanks Daniel.
I’m looking at Gold Rush on Facebook right now, I see a rack of St. Louis ribs for $19.95, a combo platter for $22.95. Its a bit pricey but if its good, I’ll take it and just have to double up on the cardio workout.

  2. I have stopped THREE times this week and left without food as they were out, or closed, it was raining so they could not cook, etc. They look like they will do well after their shakedown but I would stay away for a couple of weeks.

I obviously want them to do well; perhaps the fourth time will be the charm.

    Tip
One or so driveways away towards Auburn proper is a Mexican Food Store but the secret is their meat counter is also where you can purchase authentic, handmade, piping hot food like you would get if you were walking up on a mom and pop place around Cancun. Prices are also very, very good. Grab the salsa too, made daily, right there, too. Get the pork or beef tamales, to take home for the next day, too.

    • Curtis,
I’m glad you brought up the nearby Mexican Market. It has some unique and hard-to-find items for authentic Mexican cooking. I’ve depended on it several times.

    • Where??

    • The market is called El Charro Mexican Market & Carniceria. It has the best meat counter with some excellent marinated carne asada. The hot food is very good and very affordable. Always a stop on my way home through Auburn. The employees are very nice and I am always welcomed. Some great Mexican beers you can’t find in GV or NC as well. I would encourage stopping by and supporting this market.

  3. Thanks Ken. Sorry I missed Chris’ note for the details. Address, phone and Yelp interviews are here:
