Obama will announce re-election campaign in a few weeks

Credit: National Journal

“President Obama is fewer than three weeks away from formally announcing his reelection campaign, and will make it public with an online video his aides will post on his new campaign website, Democratic sources familiar with the plans said,” the National Journal is reporting.

“Obama’s team will try to keep the exact date and time a surprise, letting supporters know first by text message and e-mail. By that point, Obama would have opened his campaign account with the Federal Election Commission.”

“But a major Democratic National Committee fundraiser is set for April 14 in Chicago, and Democratic donors are being told that it will coincide with the announcement. Obama will attend the event.”

State passes aggressive renewable energy standard

“Earlier today, the California Assembly passed a bill that would oblige state utilities to get a third of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. It is one of the most aggressive standards in the world,” according to the S.F. Chronicle.

“The Senate passed the legislation in February, and Governor Brown is expected to sign the bill.

“How big a deal is it? Well, according to Peter Miller, a senior scientist at NRDC, ‘As a result of the RPS program, renewable energy generation in California in 2020 will be roughly equal to total current U.S. renewable generation, and supply enough clean energy to power nearly 9 million homes’ or, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, drive 3 million cars.

“Supporters say the aggressive standard could generate roughly 500,000 new green collar jobs in the next several decades.”

Trump in the “birther” seat

“A top aide to Donald Trump is sharply refuting suggestions of hypocrisy in response to the media mogul’s release of an unofficial document of his birth only hours after chastising President Obama for failing to produce his official birth certificate,” CNN is reporting.

“”I can assure you, Mr. Trump is a U.S. citizen,’ Trump aide and lawyer Michael Cohen told CNN. ‘He is only asking for the president to do what the president said he would do – release his birth certificate’

“The improbable presidential candidate set off charges of hypocrisy Monday after he provided what he claimed was a copy of his birth certificate to the conservative website Newsmax.com. The release of the document came the same day he told Fox News he keeps his birth certificate ‘on my desk’ and would gladly provide it.”

Tea party targets centrist Republican

“Tea-party groups have decided their main Republican target in the next election is Sen. Richard Lugar, a 78-year-old foreign policy specialist who, along with Orrin Hatch of Utah, is his party’s longest-serving senator. Tea-party groups also may become active in Republican primaries to unseat Mr. Hatch and Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

In Indiana, “activists were upset with Mr. Lugar’s vote for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which pumped billions of dollars into ailing financial institutions during the financial crisis of 2008, his support for President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominees and his willingness to work with Democrats. Another point of tension: Mr. Lugar’s role in working with Mr. Obama to shepherd the New Start nuclear arms treaty with Russia through the Senate late last year.”
