We hope you are enjoying New Year’s Day. For the first time, a presidential float was in the Rose Parade — showing the life and times of Ronald Reagan.
It won the National trophy for the best depiction of life in the United States, past, present or future. The float is 55 feet long and 26 feet high, carrying more than 65,000 flowers.
The float — honoring the former California governor’s 100 birthday on Feb. 6, 2011 — was sponsored by Fairfield-based Jelly Belly Candy Co. Jelly Belly’s, a favorite of Reagan’s, were handed out along the parade route. A history of Reagan and Jelly Belly, which began when the governor was looking for a candy to help kick his pipe smoking habit, is here.
