“From the Gulf Oil Spill to the West Virginia Mining Disaster, 2010 saw its fair share of newsworthy events putting environmental issues in the spotlight. Although we witnessed many tragedies, there were also many signs of hope, from historic steps taken by the EPA to tackle big polluters to landmark initiatives by states doing their part to combat climate change,” according to Huffington Post.
The list is here.
I also would add the passage of Prop. 23 in California.

I am kind of surprised that Geo-engineering was not called out as a separate story; I kind of think Cancun was a non-story; and I think domestically the fight between the EPA and texas over emissions should be a bigger story.

I think the folly of corn ethanol, and the logic of cellulosic ethanol should be bigger story. Cellulosic ethanol is almost ready and has a carbon intensity that is 3 times lower than corn ethanol and almost a quarter of gasoline.
Finally, on a global scale, the continued loss of threatened and endangered species, with a new road planned through the Serengeti to get to rare earth, the need for bush meat across most of central Africa, the three gorges dam drowning a big chunk of the river systems of central China, and the continued destruction of boreal forests in Canada and Russia and tropical forests in southeast asia and south and central America, contributing greatly to the loss.
Steve,
These are exactly the parts that get lost in the Denial Blogs. They are looking at the smaller issues, such as carbon levels and historical climate variations, without addressing habitat and species loss, pollution, and livability of urban centers.
Speaking of urban centers, everyone should read this: http://nyti.ms/geM3nz
The negative folks will be left in the dust in 2011 and beyond. Stop complaining Denial Blogs! Come up with real suggested solutions–not the 19th century and ponies with angel wings.

What an absolutely fantastic link Michael. Thank you so much for turning me on to this.
Constant innovation.
How easily we forget that the power of the human mind trumps so much of the negative….and that those stuck complaining about yesterday are irrelevant.
Solutions, we must focus on solutions, and not let the deniers, and anchors, drag us down.
