Veterans groups and military retirees are the latest group to mobilize to fight changes to their health-care system, known as Tricare, according to The Wall Street Journal.
President Obama’s bipartisan fiscal commission recommended reviewing Tricare as part of proposed cuts in federal spending.
“The heavy lifting [for this nation] is being done by the military,” Norbert Ryan, a retired Navy admiral who is president of the Military Officers Association of America, told The Joural. “They should be the last ones to give. Don’t ignore the service and sacrifice that has earned them that benefit. Don’t confuse it with Social Security. Don’t confuse it with Medicare and Medicaid.”
I will be interested to see how our local military retirees, ranging from “electeds” to government-averse tea party patriot members, react to the spending cut plans.

Sad, sorry state of affairs. I am a disabled veteran and I agree cuts in VA is way down the list. Like last. I will be more interested in what they are or will do about the Tea Party Congress folks that are STILL doing earmarks. Two Faced? Excuses that are ok?
Cut the budget and national debt on the backs of middle class and the working poor while extending $700 billion in tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.
There is something functionally wrong with our system of government in these times of crisis.
Does anybody represent the average American anymore? Which is the vast majority of the population.
35 percent tax rate (plus another 10% state) is not enough Ben?
I call anything above that theft.
50 percent of those middle class pay no income tax. Let’s get real and be true about the facts.
And explain why the government needs 55 percent of an inheritance. Do you not like family businesses?
You are the one being selfish. You are asking for redistribution of income. Just wrong.
Chris, I think if we all stop and look around we’ll find that we, or at least one member of all of our families have benefitted from at least one service from our government. I dearly hope our veterans have. I know I have. I am exceedingly grateful to have had someones kind and very professional demeanor during those times. We are blessed, yes blessed by this country of ours. We are part of a partnership in that…otherwise we’d be all consigned to the hell that is Uganda, where they put out contracts on gay people or starve and brainwash them like North Korea. Or live in caves and fight each other. Anyway, at this Christmas time, may we all continue to be blessed and bless others in whatever ways we are and can. Kate Hancock
We know government must cut expenditures, but cutting those aimed at paying back what we owe our veterans for their service and sacrifice should be not only far down the list but off the list. As long as there are some bucks in the U S till, we need to take care of their needs.
