Placer Sentinel resurfaces with new owner

In January, I wrote that the Placer Sentinel has folded after 19 years. “After looking at our end-of-the-year financials and the probability of the economy hopping back soon, we have reluctantly decided to cease publishing,” according to a letter at the time from Publisher Janice Forbes, chief executive Bob Evans and Editor Donna Lach.

The new publisher is Paul V. Scholl, with 25 years of experience in newspaper and magazine publishing.

The “new” community-oriented newspaper is producer to readers largely in Placer County. Distribution is by U.S. mail, home delivery about about 250 locations (newsstands, retailers and restaurants).

“Your support is what makes it possible to give our community what it really wants in a hometown newspaper,” Paul writes on the Sentinel’s website.

GV complains to Walgreens developer about eyesore

The city of Grass Valley has sent an email and photo to the Sacramento developer of Walgreens in Brunswick Basin, pointing out that its vacant, weed-covered project has become an eyesore.

The stalled project is infested with weeds and is a parking lot for a boat trailer, much like when it was a vacant Jim Keil Chevrolet for years, as I reported on Wednesday.

The city remains optimistic that work will resume on the drug store by early fall, when existing permits expire, according to community development director Joe Heckle. The latest timeline for completing the work is early winter, Heckle said.
