Sources: County’s District 3 results possible by early next week

The winner of the county’s District 3 Supervisor race — between Terry Lamphier and John Spencer — is possible by as early as next week, as the counting of remaining ballots gets underway, according to my sources.

So far, Lamphier is beating Spencer. The results show Lamphier with 1,862 votes (51.1 percent) and Spencer with 1,785 votes (48.9 percent), with all of the precincts reporting. Both sides are keeping their fingers crossed.

The Elections Office did not want to commit to a timeframe for counting the remaining ballots, however, beyond the required 28-day deadline for canvassing.

About 1352 ballots remain to be counted in District 3, according to election officials. All of them are mail-in ballots, so they could be counted more quickly than other types. Still verification of the voter is time consuming.

All told, 7525 ballots are left to be counted county-wide, including 6061 vote-by-mail ballots, 565 provisional ballots, and 899 damaged ballots.

Keva smoothie joint coming to “Burger Basin”

Keva Juice — a popular smoothie franchise joint — is coming to Brunswick Basin.

It will join Quiznos in a new building being constructed near the Safeway.

“On a road trip along California’s Pacific Coast Highway in 1996, Grant Haws discovered the beachside smoothie,” according to Keva’s history. “Keva is committed to making fresh, premium, deliciously craveable smoothies accessible for everyone — landlocked and otherwise.”

Keva Juice is, in fact, based in Albuquerque. The first one opened in Bountiful, Utah. Keva has 53 juice stores in 12 states.

Alice Cooper at the Center for the Arts?

No, just kidding. But my son and I always like to play Alice’s “School’s out for summer” this week, complete with air guitar. Still, “headliners” such as Rickie Lee Jones (June 18), Kris Kristofferson (June 26) and Paula Poundstone (July 10) are coming to the Center in coming months.

On a more somber note, the historic Nevada City Elementary School closes Friday. A farewell reception is set for 3:30-6:30 p.m. Friday in the school auditorium, 505 Main St. in Nevada City.

Here’s Alice on You Tube — the next best thing.

Auburn chamber: “Share ideas on how to stop oil spill”

The Auburn Chamber of Commerce in the foothills is inviting its members to offer suggestions on how to stop or contain the BP oil disaster — the nation’s worst.

“We’d like you to share your ideas on how to stop or contain the oil spill and mitigate its impact on the environment,” according to the chamber’s newsletter on Friday. “As small business owners, you know that innovation comes from many sources.”

The form for submitting a response is here.

The Auburn chamber has more than 750 members of all sizes. The organization is more than 100 years old.

Some Florida businessmen proposed using hay to help clean up the spill, as reported here.
