The Union’s sister paper in Colorado seeks new publisher

The Summit Daily News in Colorado – one of The Union’s sister papers and site of a recent flap that gained national attention – is seeking a new publisher, according to its website.

“The Summit Daily News and Summit County Journal (weekly) is seeking a Publisher to manage all facets of newspaper operations including advertising sales, revenue growth, and financial management,” according to the post. (BTW, this is what publishers do – a decidedly different role from an editor, except for managing a newsroom budget).

Jim Morgan is the current publisher of the Summit Daily News. He also holds the position of general manager of Colorado Mountain News Media.

Regular readers will recall the recent flap at the Summit Daily News that garnered national attention in The New York Times and elsewhere when a longtime journalist, Bob Berwyn, was fired over a snow report.

The incident involving the Swift-owned newspaper called into question whether the Summit Daily News fired Berwyn because a major advertiser, Vail Resorts, complained and pulled advertising.

The background is here.

“Guitar Jesus”

Anybody who makes a post on this site, with a signed name, gets to comment. We have an engaged and intelligent bunch here. Thank you.

But one person has baffled me for months: He/she signs their name as “Guitar Jesus,” typically posting in the wee hours of the night.

I have asked him/her to sign their name for posting, but the requests are ignored. Some examples of the “pearls of wisdom” are posted below. (Warning: some of the language, though ***’ed out is still very offensive).

*I’m thinking of starting a website list of local businesses to boycott because of this kind of small-town stupidity. I am surrounded by idiots, and they are getting increasingly dangerous.

*The business community wins another round in the war against the community. What is your weak pro-business stance on this kind of corruption? Something that won’t offend the NCCA political action committee?

*On vacation again? Why not spend your money in America. I have friends who own a local business. They are cutting employee hours, claiming hard times yet they are still taking their international vacation. This is what makes us hate the business community.

Class war ever cross your mind? Lots of us are talking about redefining the role of business in our community. Enjoy your position of privilege while it lasts, business scum.

*Because they are greedy anti-labor business owners. Once again it’s business vs. the rest of us. I won’t give these pr**ks one penny of my money. These are the same a**holes behind the affordable housing criminal conspiracy. You really don’t want to align yourself with these fools.

*In reply to Barry W. Pruett.
Another lap dog of the local republicans(business owners)

*F***ing rightwing idiots

* I’m from East Oakland, and I’m fairly sure small town pu**ies like this have big f***ing mouths when hanging out with other patriots, but don’t have the sac to make racist statements around some of the people I know they would surely eliminate without batting an eye.

McClatchy embracing citizen content through blogs

At a recent speech in New York, Chris Hendricks, McClatchy’s vice president of Interactive media, said in his opening remarks that McClatchy is embracing citizen content through blogs. At the moment McClatchy is not sharing revenue with these bloggers but plans to at some point in the future.

It will be interesting to watch this strategy unfold.

Details from the conference are here.

My new Germanic slippers

We’re no shopoholics, but no trip to Europe is complete without buying a new pair of slippers. They are from PantoffelDiva of Germany. The motto: We love your feet. If you look closely at how the deer is posing, it’s almost as if he is saying “Kiss my, umm, slippers!”

Austrian sleigh rides at the ski resorts

We’ve been skiing at Damuls-Mellau, a family-oriented ski area about five minutes from town. You board a free bus across the street from the hotel and get a ride to the ski area. There’s a cool “bunny hill” for our son, with instructors (appropriately named Maria) and a rope tow. We can ski along too. A gondola takes you straight up the mountain, where there’s a sweeping area for skiing. Lift tickets for children at the “bunny hill” are only about $5, while an adult ticket costs about $30. “Perks” include sleigh rides and German beer on tap.

Russ Steele’s blog in German

A former collegue of mine at CNET married a Google engineer, and they lived in Zurich for several years while Google established a beachhead there. No matter what country you’re in, Google defaults to the language of that country – in our case German.

Here’s Russ Steele’s blog in German:

Windparks erstelle nicht viele US-grüne Arbeitsplätze
Russ Steele

Ich habe über diese zuvor geschrieben, jetzt den Hauptstrom Medien wird das Problem bewusst. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer had the story.

DA agrees Brown Act violations occurred but won’t prosecute for now

The county DA’s office agreed with Grass Valley resident Steve Enos that violations of California’s open meeting law occurred in discussions about affordable housing, but the DA will not pursue criminal prosecutions for now.

The violations appeared infrequent and did not result in a prejudicial action, according to the DA.

Civil action still is possible, however. The DA agreed the affordable-housing subcommittee involved was “a standing committee” subject to the Brown Act.

“The City failed to provide the required public notices for these meetings over a number of years. But the City did invite a hand-selected group of developers and builders to attend some of the Subcommittee meetings, without providing the required notice to the public,” Enos wrote in a comment on Yolanda Cookson’s blog.

The Union’s headline “DA rejects complaint of Brown Act violation” downplayed the issue. Most newspapers, as I’ve written before, are champions of open-meeting laws.
