Crying Uncle at end of summer

My lobster grill in better economic times

Lobster grill in better economic times

I’m starting to cry Uncle now that summer is ending. It is never easy for me, and this summer was exceptional.

To wrap it up, (or to start thinking about it), I ordered some live lobsters from Legal Seafood in Boston — an end of summer surprise for my wife and son.

I will grill them with some fresh basil butter, as well as fresh corn from the Farmer’s Market and homemade gazpacho that I made from the market’s fresh ingredients (tomatoes, peppers, red onion, cilantro and so on).

(I know cooking live lobster makes some people squeamish and others downright angry, so you can stop reading. For the record, you boil them first for about five minutes, plunge them in cold water to stop cooking, split them down the middle, pierce the claw with a knife to let the steam escape, and finish cooking them on the grill, basting them in butter all the while. Do not cook beyond when they get opaque, as with any grilled fish.)

The lobsters are half price at Legal, thanks to the recession combined with a bountiful lobster season. Legal, a New England institution, is a world-class supplier and restauranteur.

The tracking of the shipment, via UPS, is below. It still amazes me how mobile our society has become, including overnight shipments of live lobsters (you keep them cool and moist in seaweed and ice packs).

The recession has been good in some ways, helping to reign us in. But sometimes you’ve got to splurge. I noticed, however, this came on a day when consumer confidence hit a four-month low and the stock market fell. I quess it’s time to hunker down quickly — again. I have some less extravagant but delicious crock pot recipes, too.

  1. Lobster is a wonderful thing! I lived in the Florida Keys for 5 years, on the water, had a boat… lobster anytime I wanted. We had massive lobster BBQ’s… lobster is wonderful!

  2. Lobster is no doubt good and available all year. I prefer the seasonal dungenes crab fresh out of the pot and chilled. Spread newspaper on the table, add some minestrone soup, along with sour dough french bread and a seasoned olive oil dip. A beer would be nice too.
