As Nevada City leans closer to opening a pot shop (I keep hearing it’s a “fait accompli”), the local media should report who uses medical marijuana cards.
Cardholders are not just older people with cancer and other ailments — the group includes high-school and college students. A lot of doctors know this and target them in ads that run in student newspapers.
Ads for medical marijuana evaluations are regularly found in The Orion, the Chico State student newspaper.
One ad uses the slogan “not just for illness, but for wellness” and offers confidential evaluations for symptoms, such as chronic pain, cancer, migraines “and many more,” as the Chico paper reports.
The student paper has done some well-researched reporting. One example, “Community divided on marijuana issue,” is here.
The article points out the concerns of police:
“Officer Bill Dawson of the Chico Police Department has been on the force for more than 21 years and sees a lot of issues with medical marijuana use in Chico, even though he voted to legalize it.
“‘There is no control right now,’ Dawson said. “Anybody and their uncle can grow it.”
Dawson has seen a significant increase in crime when it comes to medical and recreational marijuana use in Chico over the past 10 years, especially throughout the student population, he said. College students have even been killed over it.”
I haven’t heard from school officials on the proposed marijuana dispensary in Nevada City, including Sierra College or the high schools. Some high-school students here have medical marijuana perscriptions.
Again, let’s do some more reporting on the issue as we consider opening a new kind of business in town.
